Replace an R7S Lamp? Step-by-step guide

Replacing an R7S lamp might sound simple, but it can be tricky if you’re unfamiliar with the fitting. In this guide, we explain step by step how to safely and correctly replace a halogen R7S lamp with an energy-efficient LED version. Check out our full range of r7s lamps for suitable replacements.

What is an R7S Lamp?

An R7S lamp is a linear tube lamp with contact pins at both ends. It’s often used in floodlights, work lights, and some wall fixtures. Halogen versions consume a lot of energy, so switching to LED is a smart move.

Preparation: Safety First

Always turn off the power before starting. This prevents electrical shocks and short circuits. Use a voltage tester to double-check there’s no current in the fitting.

Let the lamp cool down—halogen bulbs get extremely hot. Use gloves to avoid leaving greasy fingerprints or getting burned.

Removing the Old R7S Lamp

  1. Make sure the fixture is stable.

  2. Grasp the lamp gently at both ends.

  3. Push one end slightly inward to release the other from the socket.

  4. Remove the lamp entirely.

If the bulb feels stuck, use a gentle sliding motion—don’t twist.

Installing the New LED R7S Lamp

Choose the correct length (78 mm, 118 mm, 189 mm, etc.). Also check wattage and light color.

  1. Insert one end into the socket.

  2. Gently press the lamp towards that end.

  3. Insert the other end into the second socket.

  4. Restore power and test the lamp.

If You Use a Dimmer

Not all LED R7S lamps work with dimmers. If you’re using one, make sure to buy a dimmable LED R7S lamp to avoid flickering or malfunction.
