How to wire a dimmer? Step-by-step instructions

Wiring a dimmer is a smart way to add both efficiency and ambiance to your lighting. As you know, dimmers let you fine-tune brightness for every moment. Planning to use LEDs? First check our LED dimmers to find the right one.

Tools You Need:

  • Compatible dimmer (LED requires special types)

  • Voltage tester or multimeter

  • Screwdriver

  • Wire stripper and possibly electrical tape

Step 1: Turn Off Power

Switch off the power in your fuse box. Always double-check with a voltage tester before touching any wires.

Step 2: Remove the Old Switch

  • Unscrew and remove the wall plate and switch.

  • Pull out the switch and disconnect the wires.

  • Take notes or photos of the wire positions.

Step 3: Connect the Dimmer

  • Strip wires if needed.

  • Connect the live wire (L) to the L terminal.

  • Connect the load wire (often black) to the ~ terminal.

  • If present, isolate the ground wire properly.

  • Fit the dimmer securely into the wall box.

Step 4: Reassemble and Test

  • Attach the wall plate and knob.

  • Turn power back on.

  • Test the dimmer’s operation: does the light dim smoothly?

Tips:

  • Always match dimmer to the bulb type.

  • Trailing-edge dimmers work best with LEDs.

  • Buzzing or flickering? Try another dimmer or LED model.
