LED lighting is energy-efficient, long-lasting, and increasingly popular. However, not every LED bulb can be dimmed, and not every dimmer works well with LED. In this guide, we explain step-by-step how to properly dim LED bulbs and what to watch out for. Be sure to check out the range of dimmable LED lights at ThatsLed.nl.
First, make sure your bulb is dimmable — this should be indicated on the packaging. Then, use a dimmer designed for LEDs. Standard incandescent dimmers usually don't work well with LED bulbs, causing flickering or a limited dim range.
We recommend a trailing edge dimmer, which is quieter and performs better with low-wattage LEDs.
Before starting, always switch off the power:
Remove the existing switch.
Connect the live (brown) and switched live (black) wires to the dimmer.
Fit the dimmer into the wall box and attach the faceplate.
Turn the power back on and test the dimming function.
If the bulb flickers or hums, it may be incompatible. Try another dimmer or ensure your bulb is dimmable.
Flickering: Caused by incompatible dimmers or low wattage.
Limited dimming range: Some bulbs don’t dim to 0%.
Buzzing sounds: Cheap dimmers may hum. Trailing edge types are often quieter.
Always pair dimmable LEDs with LED-compatible dimmers.
Start with one bulb to test performance.
Use trusted brands like Ledvion, Gira, or Busch-Jaeger.
