New (LED) dimmer
Voltage tester or multimeter
Screwdriver
Wire stripper (optional)
Electrical tape (optional)
Go to the fuse box and switch off the circuit that powers the dimmer. Use a voltage tester to confirm that no power is present.
Remove the cover plate and knob.
Unscrew the dimmer from the wall box.
Gently disconnect the wires. Make a note or photo of their positions.
Strip the wires if needed.
Connect the wires to the correct terminals on the new dimmer: usually L (live) and the ~ symbol for the lamp wire.
Secure the dimmer back in the wall box.
Mount the cover plate and reattach the knob. Ensure everything is properly aligned and secure.
Restore power via the fuse box. Test the dimmer: does the light turn on and dim smoothly? No buzzing? Then the job is done right.
Always use a dimmer that matches your bulb type.
For LED lights, trailing-edge dimmers are usually best.
