A well-functioning dimmer can make the difference between annoying flicker and the perfect lighting ambiance. In this article, I explain how to properly adjust your dimmer and get the best out of your LED lighting.
As you know, LED lights are more sensitive than traditional bulbs. A poorly adjusted dimmer can cause flickering, an overly bright minimum level, or lights that won’t turn off. Proper adjustment improves performance and extends the life of your lights.
Not every dimmer works with LED. Check if it’s LED-compatible. If it only says "R, L" or "C" without an LED symbol, it’s likely a conventional dimmer. Always choose a trailing edge dimmer for LEDs.
Turn off power – Switch off the circuit the dimmer is on.
Remove the knob – Carefully pull off the dimmer knob.
Find the adjustment screw – Usually located inside, it sets the minimum brightness.
Turn power back on – Watch the light while adjusting.
Set minimum level – Turn the screw until the lowest stable light level is found.
Test dimming range – Rotate the knob fully to ensure smooth operation.
Always use dimmable LED bulbs.
Avoid mixing different types of bulbs.
Cheap unbranded dimmers often cause problems.
Let the dimmer run on minimum for a few minutes to test stability.
